Natural Child Birth - Analyzing The Options Between Giving Birth At Home Or In A Healthcare Facility

It's funny when you realize that society often thinks we are weird if we consider having a baby anywhere but in a healthcare facility as natural childbirth used to be the sole way of child birth. A home birth was anything but special. Then, things transformed. Ironically, this didn't mean much for women or their newborns, who usually fared better in the house compared to in some of the first hospitals. Early hospital wards often had higher infant fatality rates and much more mothers who died in child birth, even a century ago, in much larger numbers than moms attended to in the house with midwives.

Obviously, medical practice has altered a lot since the first days of labor and delivery in a few of those first nursing homes, but some things truly haven't. When you line up all the statistics on home birth compared to hospital births, natural childbirth is still safer for the majority of mothers and newborns.

Yes, in a few instances, it probably is best to have mother give birth in the hospital. This can be because the birth is risky or for the reason that mom is expecting multiples. High risk pregnancy may include a mother with preeclampsia or diabetes, or a baby who is preterm. A home birth may also not be the best choice if mom has high blood pressure levels. For the majority of mothers, however, a home birth is a good option.

Natural childbirth provides options that not all nursing homes may offer. Generally, mothers have more liberty regarding things like moving around and taking their time, where, at a hospital, mother may be confined to a bed, sometimes even buckled in. Being confined in such a manner often itself causes a delay in labor. Based on what time a year mother goes into labor, the hospital may not allow a number of visitors to the labor room. For example in some spring months, when the risk of Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is greater, visitors are usually limited to adults only. RSV brings up one more serious problem of hospital stays and that is infection. Infection is one of the main reasons for complications and even death in America's hospitals.

The point is that hospital stays, although at times necessary, expose both mother and newborn to many unnecessary risks and may often limit mom's options for her own labor and delivery.

There are, of course, other factors which make natural births a much better option too. Research in the British Medical Journal found that a "planned home births for low risk women in the United States are associated with similar safety and less medical treatment as low risk hospital births".

Overall, a natural childbirth can be quite a safer option than a hospital birth and provide mom alternatives that she may, actually, not even have in the hospital, not the least of which is a safe delivery, surrounded by the folks she loves.
